Meg Whitman Named as HP's New CEO

HP announced today that Meg Whitman would be taking over as CEO, replacing outgoing CEO Leo Apotheker after less than a year on the job. According to the New York Times, Whitman is not expected to reverse course on several of her predecessor's most contentious decisions, including the unceremonious dumping of WebOS hardware last month and its willingness to sell or spin off its PC business.
Whitman, who served as CEO of eBay from 1998 to 2008, also ran for governor of California in the state's last election.

The funniest thing is that it looks like an old boys club where people keep shuffling seats and taking home millions and noone actually gives a damn about the company.And it’s not even as if it’s that complicated a concept: the people who _understand_ the company, its products and its customers are the ones who have to be at the helm, the number pushers are the ones who need to take care of operations.
But yeah, I’m sure Meg Whitman has been in talks with people all over HP to filter out good ideas to put into productions, focus on products with potential and know where to reorganize to make HP leaner and more effective. So all will be well! \o/

The board just doesn't learn. I suppose after spending $10 billion on Autonomy they feel compelled to pursue that folly to its bitter end. HP has been such a tech giant in the past,it's sad to see them stumbling into oblivion.Omid.M - Thursday, September 22, 2011 - link

The problem when they hired Leo was that a lot of people they called for the job didn't want it, and I'm sure that's no different (maybe even worse, given the board's propensity for firing CEOs) now - not saying that happened with Webb McKinney, but HP probably doesn't have its pick of candidates at this point.Brutus1234 - Thursday, September 22, 2011 - link
Isn't Meg Whitman the person who paid nearly 3.1 billion dollars for Skype while at Ebay and then write down 1 Billion of that investment until they sold it, only to see it get sold for 8.5billion 2 years later.I think you could have put a cactus in the CEO chair at Ebay and it would have done well. Right place right time. The one significant deal she made doesn't bode well for HP.
